Johann von Diesbach

Johann von Diesbach was a renowned and valiant Swiss captain, commander of a square of Swiss pikemen at Pavia. 

In the tapestry, he is depicted with his pike still raised at the moment when, seeing that his attempts to rally his men, who had thrown down their weapons and were surrendering or fleeing, were futile, he chose death with honour over the infamy of surrender.
